Was fortunate to have a local friend took this picture; especially when the weather during our visit was excruciatingly hot. Did you know Japan’s most famous Starbucks is located on the way to Dazaifu Tenmangu? Starbucks Dazaifu (スターバックス太宰府) was designed by world-renowned architect Kuma Kengo (隈研吾); who is known for assimilating both traditional and modern designs using natural materials. The most notable attribute that is visible even from the outside is the sheer use of jointing wood. Some local buses are available from JR Futsukaichi station to Dazaifu too, but they are rather expensive and infrequent. It is built over the grave of Sugawara no Michizane (845–903) and is one of the main shrines dedicated to Tenjin, the deified form of Michizane. Having started in 958 as a requiem for the soul of Michizane, the ceremony was eventually discontinued between the late 15th century and modern period before being revived in 1963.
To get here, you’ll need to walk along the Kyushu nature trail between Chikuzen Kokubunji Temple to Mount Shioji. A quieter temple to visit is Kanzeonji Temple which is a good place to add to your Dazaifu one day itinerary. What we love about the Kanzeonji Temple area is how quiet and peaceful it is. When you walk towards the temples, you’ll see moss growing on the tree trunks so there is this magical feel when approaching the temple. During our visit, we saw one other person visiting the temple so you won’t deal with the crowds here.
